Case Description
Maxim Asriyan, a medical assistant at a St. Petersburg clinic, was detained by FSB officers at Pulkovo Airport on October 7, 2022. According to the investigation, Asriyan returned from Georgia and was preparing to set fire to the Frunzensky military enlistment office in St. Petersburg, holding extremist views and being dissatisfied with the authorities and the SVO." He bought lighter fluid but did not use it because he noticed security at the military enlistment office. Asriyan admitted to purchasing the flammable liquid and being present near the military enlistment office. However, he stated that he had changed his mind about setting fire to the military enlistment office, as he did not want people to suffer. The medical orderly was charged with "attempting to commit a terrorist act." "10 October the court sent Asryan to the SIZO. n December 2023, it became known that the investigation added a charge of treason to the charge of attempted terrorism. It is unknown what prompted the initiation of yet another criminal case. On January 18, 2024, the 1st Western Military Court found Maxim Asriyan guilty and sentenced him to 8 years in prison. Asryan spent the first 2.5 years in prison, the rest in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
