Case Description
On March 3, 2022, in Nizhny Novgorod, a search was conducted at the home of 65-year-old local resident and civil activist Lev Lerman. He was taken away for questioning as a witness in a certain case, and then arrested for 9 days under the article on holding an unauthorized mass event. At that time, no fewer than 2 more searches were conducted at his place. During the last search, 10 cartridges were allegedly found in the basement of his apartment building. An criminal case was opened against Lerman for illegal possession of ammunition. The court sent him to a pre-trial detention center. Lerman is an opposition activist. After 24 February 2022, he actively expressed his disagreement with Putin's policy on his Facebook and called for protests. On October 10, 2023, the Kanavinsky District Court of the city of Nizhny Novgorod sentenced him to 12 years in a strict regime colony. Nizhny Novgorod found Lev Lerman guilty and sentenced him to 4 years in a penal colony-settlement. On December 23, 2022, the Nizhny Novgorod Regional Court left the verdict unchanged. On May 30, 2025, Lerman was released from the colony, after which he left Russia and went to Israel.
