Case Description
On the night of February 15, 2024, security forces broke into the community of the Russian Orthodox Church of the Tsarist Empire (ROCE) in the village of Aibashi, Ulyanovsk Oblast, which shares the idea of the "redeemer tsar. Police officers beat the monks, humiliating and insulting them and mocking their faith, breaking furniture, sawing off doors and windows, and also desecrating holy objects: they beat icons with batons and trampled on them. As a result, about 70 people were detained and taken to a police station 100 kilometers from the community, without being allowed to get dressed, in the freezing cold. Most of the parishioners were released without drawing up a protocol or bringing charges. Criminal cases were initiated against Bishop Zosima (Leonid Vlasov), Metropolitan Enoch (Alexander Kormishchenko), Bishop Simeon (Nikita Shostak), and Schema-Abbess Sophronia (Marina Potemina) on charges of the activities of a non-profit organization that infringes on the personality and rights of citizens." Bishop Zosima was also accused of justifying terrorism. It is unknown what exactly became the reason for the accusation. On February 16, 2024, the Leninsky District Court of Ulyanovsk sent all four under arrest.
