Case Description
In September 2022, a 26-year-old local resident, Ukrainian citizen Ivan Zabavsky, disappeared in the occupied Kharkiv region. He went to his native village of Tavolzhanka in the Kharkiv region, occupied by Russian troops, to take his mother out from under fire. The woman had already left the village by that time, but Ivan did not know about it due to communication problems. Nothing was known about him for several months, and only in May 2023, the Russian Ministry of Defense informed his mother that her son had been detained "for opposing the SMO. In June 2023, the Petrogradsky District Court of St. Petersburg sent Zabavsky to a pre-trial detention facility on charges of espionage. The details of the charges are unknown. January 30, 2025, the St. Petersburg City Court found Ivan Zabavsky guilty and sentenced him to 11 years in a strict regime colony. On June 17, 2025, the Second Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction upheld the verdict.
