Case Description
In March 2023, a criminal case was opened against director and screenwriter Ivan Vyrypaev. According to the investigation, Vyrypaev spread "fakes" about the actions of the Russian armed forces under the guise of reliable information. In April he was put on the wanted list and arrested in absentia. The reason for the persecution of the director was his appearance on Chicago radio Radio NVC, an interview with the "Khodorkovsky LIFE" channel, a broadcast on the YouTube channel "OVD-Info" and publications on his personal website, including a "letter to Russian theaters" published in March 2022. In a letter, Vyrevaev informed all state theaters in Russia where his plays are staged that the money he would receive from them, he would transfer to Ukrainian funds to help refugees." On December 15, 2023, Judge Yevgenia Nikolaeva of the Basmanny District Court of Moscow found Ivan Vyrypaev guilty and sentenced him in absentia to eight years in a general regime colony. July 24, 2024, the Moscow City Court overturned the verdict. On August 12, 2024, the Basmanny District Court of Moscow found Ivan Vyrïpaev guilty and sentenced him to 7.5 years in a general regime correctional colony. The court also banned Vyrivayev from administering websites for 4 years. The term of serving the sentence of imprisonment is calculated from the moment of extradition of Vyrypaev Ivan Aleksandrovich to the territory of the Russian Federation, or from the moment of his detention on the territory of the Russian Federation.
