Case Description
In the city of Kirishi, Leningrad Oblast, on the night of June 26, 2024, two 18-year-old local residents, Ivan Stepanov and Georgy Petrov, sat by the Eternal Flame at the "Memory of the Fallen" memorial in Victory Park, fried sausages on the fire, and ate them. The young men were detained on the same day. Against them, a criminal case was initiated for the rehabilitation of Nazism. According to law enforcement, the young men "insulted the memory of the defenders of the Fatherland during the Great Patriotic War and desecrated the symbol of military glory - the memorial 'Eternal Flame.'" At the time of the investigation, the defendants in the case were taken into custody not to leave. On October 22, 2024, the Leningrad Regional Court found Ivan Stepanov and Georgy Petrov guilty and sentenced them both to 1 year of imprisonment each, with a ban on posting any information on the Internet for 6 months. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
