Case Description
In the Admiralteysky district of St. Petersburg on the evening of August 26, 2023, 30-year-old Ivan Semyonov first broke the glass with a brick, and then tried to set fire to the building of the conscription point for military service with a Molotov cocktail. The man filmed his actions on his phone. Employees of the checkpoint noticed Semenov and detained him, and in the end he did not have time to set anything on fire. A criminal case was opened against Semyonov for attempted terrorist attack causing significant damage. According to the investigation, in August 2023, Semyonov received an offer via the Internet from unidentified individuals to set fire to a military conscription point for contract service in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region, located at: St. Petersburg, per. Pod'ezdnoi, d. 4, letter "A. According to the FSB, the Petersburg resident acted with the aim of "intimidating the population" and creating a "danger of death, causing significant property damage and other serious consequences in the form of destruction of documentation and an electronic database containing information about citizens in reserve, leading to a disruption in the supply of mobilization resources, suspension of the recruitment of citizens for military service under contract and a decrease in the combat readiness of military units of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, that is, in order to destabilize the activities of government bodies and influence their decisions on the conscription of citizens of the Russian Federation for military service under mobilization into the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, as well as the suspension of the special military operation conducted by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine." Semenova was placed in a pre-trial detention center for the duration of the investigation. On June 14, 2024, the 1st Western Military District Court found Ivan Semyonov guilty and sentenced him to 8 years of imprisonment, with the first 2.5 years to be served in prison and the remaining part of the sentence in a strict regime penal colony. On September 16, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the sentence.
