Case Description
In the city of Volzhsk, Republic of Mari El, no later than November 2024, a criminal case was initiated against 36-year-old local resident Ivan Petrov for 'fakes' about the Russian army. According to the investigation, in November 2023, Petrov allegedly posted a comment on social media under a publication about the installation of a memorial plaque dedicated to a soldier who died in Ukraine. The comment stated that the invasion of a neighboring country was a violation of its territorial integrity and independence, that Russian soldiers killed Ukrainian prisoners of war and civilians in Bucha, and also destroyed civilian objects in Mariupol. There is no information about the chosen preventive measure. Volzhsky City Court of Mari El on December 24, 2024 found Ivan Petrov guilty and sentenced him to 2 years of compulsory labor with 10% of his wages withheld for the state. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
