Case Description
In November 2022, security forces detained a local resident, Ivan Kavinov, in the city of Kovrov, Vladimir Oblast. Charges were brought against him under the article on the dissemination of "fakes" about the Russian army motivated by political hatred. November 11 Kovrov City Court sent Kavinov to the pre-trial detention center. According to the investigation, in July 2022, in order to form a negative attitude towards the actions of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation during the special military operation in Ukraine, in one of the Telegram channels in a general chat for three thousand subscribers, Kavinov posted at least seven reposts from other channels reporting that Russian servicemen were raping, torturing and kidnapping civilians in Ukraine, as well as destroying warehouses with humanitarian aid. The investigation and the court considered that these posts contained "deliberately false information about the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation." 4. On May 26, 2023, Judge Yuri Shestipal of the Kovrov City Court of the Vladimir Region sentenced Ivan Kavinov to 3 years in a strict regime colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
