The executor, realizing the illegality of his actions, turned to the FSB and refused to carry out the assignment. Dobrovolsky himself later stated that the charges against him were fabricated and that he was subjected to psychological pressure during the investigation. The court placed the man in custody. On March 24, 2025, the Krasnoyarsk Regional Court found Ivan Dobrovolsky guilty and sentenced him to 8 years in prison, with the first 2 years to be served in prison, and the remaining term in a strict regime colony. On July 2, 2025, the Fifth Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction changed the verdict: the court recognized "committing a crime in conditions of armed conflict" as an aggravating circumstance and increased the sentence to 8 years 6 months of imprisonment, but excluded serving the first 2 years of imprisonment in prison.
