Case Description
At the end of February 2024, a criminal case was opened in Kaliningrad regarding desecration of a burial structure against 38-year-old resident of Sverdlovsk Oblast Sergey Lopatnikov and 37-year-old resident of Izhevsk Inna Karaulova. According to investigators, on the night of 27 February, a man and a woman, while at the memorial complex for 1,200 Guardsmen in Kaliningrad - a fraternal grave of soldiers who died during the storming of the fortress city of Königsberg in April 1945 - had a picnic, jumped over the Eternal Flame, and stole a basket of flowers. As a preventive measure, house arrest was chosen for both defendants. On April 27, 2024, the Leningrad District Court of Kaliningrad found the defendants guilty and sentenced Sergey Lopatnikov to one year in a penal colony-settlement, and Inna Karaulova to six months in a penal colony-settlement. The court ruled to grant Karaulova a deferral from serving her sentence in the form of imprisonment until her child reaches the age of fourteen, that is, until January 21, 2028." The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
