Case Description
In North Ossetia, at the international automobile checkpoint in Verkhny Lars, while attempting to cross the state border between Russia and Georgia in mid-December 2023, 20-year-old Ilya Zabolotsky from the Altai Territory was detained. First, administrative protocols were drawn up against the young man four times for petty hooliganism and failure to comply with a lawful order of an official. The Sovetsky District Court of Vladikavkaz issued a ruling four times to impose administrative arrest for 15 days. As a result, a criminal case was opened against Zabolotsky for attempted state treason. According to the investigation, the young man, being an "opponent of the SMO, planned to join a Ukrainian unit to fight against the Russian army. He allegedly found 'step-by-step instructions' and filled out an application 'to join one of the armed formations that are part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,' and wanted to leave for Ukraine through Vladivostok and Georgia, but he was detained by FSB officers. 28 October 2024, the Supreme Court of North Ossetia found Ilya Zabolotsky guilty and sentenced him to 5 years in a strict regime colony and 1 year of restricted freedom. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
