Case Description
The Ministry of Internal Affairs put out a wanted notice for politician Ilya Yashin, who was released from the colony in August as part of an exchange. Mediazona found this information in the wanted database. No official announcement was made about the initiation of a new criminal case against the oppositionist. 4. ___ The police came to the parents' house yesterday for a search. This is related to the criminal case for which I was previously put on the wanted list. As it turned out, the case was initiated on December 5 under Article 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation due to my refusal to recognize myself as a foreign agent. After the search, the mother and father were interrogated at the investigative department. The investigator was interested in whether they were in contact with me and where I am now. You might think that the security forces don't know where they themselves sent me from Russia... But my parents, of course, invoked Article 51 of the Constitution and refused to answer questions. 1. ___ Ilya Yashin's parents were searched. The politician reported that investigative actions took place in the apartment of Valery and Tatyana Yashin in connection with a criminal case against their son for evading the 'obligations of a foreign agent' (Article 330.1 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). After the search, the family couple was interrogated at the investigative department, where they were asked about Yashin's whereabouts. 'You'd think the security forces don't know where they themselves sent me from Russia... But my parents, of course, used Article 51 of the Constitution and refused to answer questions.' "All this is unpleasant, but expected, of course, the politician reported. According to the investigation, in April 2022, Ilya Yashin, during a live broadcast on YouTube, disseminated "knowingly false information about the killing of civilians in the city of Bucha by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation" (Kyiv region of Ukraine). Meanwhile, as the Investigative Committee emphasized, the politician was aware that the photographs and videos published by the Ukrainian authorities about this 'are a provocation.'", The indictment, published on Yashin's social networks, indicated that the former municipal deputy "feels hostility towards the political system in the Russian Federation, denies the obvious need to ensure the security of the Russian Federation from external threats and suppress violations of the fundamental rights of citizens of the DPR and LPR. During the trial, Ilya Yashin insisted that in the video he voiced both the official version of the Ukrainian side and the official position of the Ministry of Defense of Russia, and the video used materials from several media outlets at once - in particular, a BBC report and material by Kommersant journalist Alexander Kotz. The defense also provided its own conclusion by linguist Igor Zharkov to the court, who indicated that Yashin was only expressing his opinion and attitude, and not making any assertions." On December 9, 2023, the Meshchansky Court sentenced Ilya Yashin to 8 years and 6 months in a general regime colony. 19 April 2023, the Moscow Oblast Court upheld the sentence. On August 1, 2024, Ilya Yashin was released from imprisonment as part of an exchange between the USA and Russia. In December 2024, the Ministry of Internal Affairs put Yashin on the wanted list. The article of the Criminal Code for which he is being sought is unknown. On October 13, 2025, Yashina was included in the list of Rosfinmonitoring as involved in a crime of an extremist nature.
