Case Description
On October 16, 2022, Ilya Khaimov and Maxim Popov were detained in Nizhny Novgorod. The men allegedly prepared a plan to set fire to one of the draft points. According to the investigation, the men received an offer to set fire to local military enlistment offices from 'unidentified representatives of Ukrainian special services.' For this, they allegedly promised to pay $3500 in cryptocurrency. According to the court, the 'customers' demanded that slogans like 'Nizhny Novgorod against the war' be shouted during the arson attacks and recorded on video. Ilya and Maxim were accused of "preparation for a crime" and "committing a terrorist act by a group of persons by prior conspiracy." The court sent both to SIZO. On June 13, 2023, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Maxim Popov guilty and sentenced him to five years in a strict regime colony. September 6, 2023, the Appellate Military Court upheld the sentence. On September 6, 2023, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Ilya Khaimov guilty and sentenced him to seven years in a strict regime colony. November 14, 2023, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict.
