Case Description
In Tomsk no later than December 2024, 24-year-old local resident Ilya Katukia was detained. He was accused of treason, attempted terrorism, and justifying terrorism. According to law enforcement officers, Katukia, being "opposed to the political course of the Russian Federation and the special military operation conducted by the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation" and being a supporter of the "Russian Volunteer Corps" organization, initiated correspondence with a representative of this organization and reported his intention to assist in activities aimed against the security of the Russian Federation, including the possibility of committing a terrorist act on the territory of the Tomsk region. He allegedly received a wheel derailer (a metal device that is placed on the rails to cause a train to derail) by mail, and he was detained on the spot when he started assembling it. It is also claimed that in conversations with acquaintances, Katukia spoke approvingly of the actions of the 'RDK' - this was qualified as justification of terrorism. Following the request of the investigation, the court placed the young man in custody. On April 2, 2025, the 2nd Eastern Military District Court found Ilya Katukia guilty and sentenced him to 13 years in prison. During the first 2 years he must spend in prison, the rest of the term - in a strict regime colony. The court also fined him 100 thousand." rubles. As a result, security forces detained Daru Shchukina, Yulia Karpukhina, and Artyom Uyumenen.
