Case Description
In Novosibirsk on the morning of September 29, 2022, an unknown person threw Molotov cocktails into the windows of the military enlistment office in the Kirovsky and Leninsky districts of the city. A fire broke out on an area of 0.5 square meters on the outside, and the fire was 'promptly contained'. The property and premises of the military commissariat were not damaged. On the same day, a local resident Ilya Baburin was detained on charges of arson. Novosibirsk Dzerzhinsky District Court placed him in custody. Initially, a case was opened against him under the article on organizing a terrorist act. Later, another article was added to this charge - about involvement in terrorist activities. According to the version of the security forces, Baburin acted "on the orders of foreign customers." Initially, under torture and pressure, Ilya signed a confession and entered into a pretrial agreement. However, later he reconsidered the situation and firmly decided not to incriminate himself and refuse the deal with the investigation. After that, the investigation repeatedly toughened the charges against Baburin: on December 18, 2022, Ilya was additionally charged with "participation in an illegal armed formation" and "participation in the activities of a terrorist organization." "According to the security forces' version, the young man was a participant in the 'Ukrainian militarized nationalist association "Azov. '", On March 31, 2023, an article on attempted "state treason" was added to the charges. Meanwhile, no new episodes in Baburin's case appeared, and the investigator called the organization of the arson of the military enlistment office and participation in the 'Azov' battalion treason. A few months later, on September 28, an FSB investigator brought charges against the young man under articles on the "illegal circulation of special technical means intended for covert information gathering" due to an allegedly found GPS beacon during a search, and "terrorism" - in connection with the arson of a music school, to which Baburin was also allegedly involved. On May 20, 2024, the 2nd Eastern Military District Court found Ilya Baburin guilty and sentenced him to 25 years in prison. Baburin will spend the first five years of his sentence in prison, the remaining years in a strict regime colony. The court also fined him 100 thousand." rubles and restriction of freedom for 1.5 years. October 16, 2024, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict.
