Case Description
On April 19, 2017, a criminal case was opened against local resident Ilgar Aliyev in Izberbash, Republic of Dagestan. He was accused of organizing the activities of an extremist organization and involving other persons in it. According to the investigation, Aliyev, being the head of a cell of the international religious organization Nurjular banned in Russia, organized its activities from 2011 to April 2017. He conducted classes ("darses") on studying the works of Turkish theologian Said Nursi in his home in Izberbash, as well as in Makhachkala and Khasavyurt, involving other people in this activity. It is alleged that he attended international conferences of Nursi's followers abroad and kept a large amount of prohibited literature at home. According to some data, Aliyev was 20 years old at the time of his detention, according to others - he was born in 1977. Aliev was detained on April 21, 2017. He was remanded in custody for the duration of the investigation and trial. On May 30, 2018, the Izberbash City Court of the Republic of Dagestan found Ilgar Aliyev guilty and sentenced him to 8 years in a general regime colony with subsequent restriction of freedom for 2 years. On July 25, 2018, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Dagestan left the sentence in force. No later than December 2, 2022, the Fifth Cassation Court of General Jurisdiction excluded the charge of involving other persons and reduced the sentence to 6 years of imprisonment. Taking into account the time served, Aliyev was released from the colony.
