Case Description
In Moscow, upon arrival from Georgia at one of the airports in May 2023, 49-year-old Igor Boytsun, a resident of the city of Inta in the Komi Republic, was detained. The pretext for the detention was allegedly illegal crossing of the border with Ukraine. Boytsun himself claimed that he returned to Russia to settle his affairs. Under pressure from security forces, Boytsun showed his phone, after which a criminal case was opened against him for "calls for terrorism" and "calls for extremism. The reason for the criminal prosecution was comments on the video hosting site YouTube, as well as video clips that, according to the investigation, Boytsun posted on his YouTube channel. It is unknown which specific video clips served as the basis for initiating a criminal case. He was escorted from Moscow to Syktyvkar, after which the court sent him to a remand prison. On September 13, 2023, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Igor Boytsov guilty and sentenced him to six years in a general regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
