Case Description
On May 5, 2022, in the city of Sovetsk, Kaliningrad region, a criminal case was opened against pensioner Igor Baryshnikov for "fakes" about the army due to three social media posts mentioning what the Russian army did in Bucha and Mariupol. Barishnikova was then taken to the Investigative Committee, and he was placed under house arrest pending sentencing. At the trial, lawyers stated that the activist had serious health problems and that there was a risk to his life due to the possible rupture of the catheter. On June 22, 2023, the Soviet City Court of the Kaliningrad Region found Igor Baryshnikov guilty and sentenced him to 7.5 years in prison in a general regime colony for his posts on social networks. The judge Olga Balandina issued the verdict. Baryshnikova was taken into custody in the courtroom. He was the sole guardian of his 97-year-old disabled mother. On August 7, 2023, Igor Baryshnikov's mother, Yevgenia Veniaminovna, passed away, her condition deteriorated sharply after her son was arrested. Barishnikov's defense requested the court to allow him to attend his mother's funeral under escort, but Judge Balandina refused. In 2021, Barsnikova was arrested twice for participating in a rally in support of Alexei Navalny and "for allegedly calling for participation in the rally" once for eight days and once for a month.
