Case Description
At the end of August 2022, a criminal case was opened against human rights defender Gregory Marcus Severin Winter from Cherepovets (former name - Grigory Winter) under the article on "fakes" about the Russian army. The reason for the criminal prosecution was posts and comments on VKontakte about the events in Bucha and Irpin and the strike on the drama theater in Mariupol - about how military personnel of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the cities of Bucha and Irpin, Ukraine, raped women and children, killed civilians and tried to burn their bodies. After a search and interrogation, Winter was sent to a pre-trial detention center. 19 October 2022, the defence managed to secure the transfer of Winter to house arrest. On October 28, the appellate court overturned this decision. Later, a decision was again made to place him under house arrest. On November 3, 2023, house arrest was replaced by a ban on certain actions. On January 18, 2024, Judge Elizaveta Chistyakova of the Cherepovets City Court of the Vologda Region found Gregory Marcus Severin Winter guilty and sentenced him to three years in a general regime colony. Additionally, the court banned Winter from administering websites for two years. 27 May 2024 the Vologda Regional Court upheld the sentence.
