Case Description
In the occupied Donetsk region, no later than August 2024 (the exact date is unknown), a criminal case was opened in absentia for mercenarism against Georgian citizen Giorgi Akhalaya. According to the Russian investigation, between March and May 2022, Akhlai arrived in Ukraine and voluntarily joined the Georgian National Legion, where he underwent military training. From May 2022 to August 2024, he participated as part of the Caucasian Legion in combat operations on the side of Ukraine in various points of combat contact. The reward received by Akhalay is equivalent to more than 2.1 million. rubles. On December 5, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic sentenced Georgy Akhalaya in absentia to 14 years in prison to be served in a strict regime correctional colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
