Case Description
On August 18, 2024, in the city of Mikun, Komi Republic, 44-year-old Gennady Kalashnikov, a resident of Vorkuta, was detained. He was returning home from vacation with his family. He was removed from the train and arrested. Gennady has type 1 diabetes. When he was detained, he barely managed to grab a bag with insulin. A criminal case was initiated against Kalashnikov on charges of public calls for terrorism and extremism. The reason for the criminal prosecution was comments in Telegram on the topic of "SVO." According to law enforcement, the Vorkuta resident "posted textual materials in open access aimed at approving the activities of a terrorist organization banned in Russia, as well as calls for violent actions against Russian military personnel": "Glory to the RDK!". The man was placed in custody. After the case was transferred to court, it turned out that Kalashnikov was also charged with an article on assisting terrorist activities. The reason was Kalashnikov's correspondence with his son on March 16, 2024. At that time, Alexei Kalashnikov was serving under contract in the Murmansk region, and a month later he was sent to the partially occupied Kherson region in Ukraine. According to the indictment, Kalashnikov sent his son a video from the RDK channel with the question: "Shall we go to the RDK?". Alexei Kalashnikov flatly refused, replying that he was "not interested in any of this" and that he only wanted to play computer games. On May 22, 2025, the 1st Western District Military Court found Gennady Kalashnikov guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in a strict regime colony - the first three years in prison, the remaining term in a strict regime colony. Additionally, the court imposed a fine of 400 thousand rubles on Kalashnikov. On October 17, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
