Case Description
In February 2023, a criminal case was initiated against pensioner Yevgenia Mayboroda, a 71-year-old resident of Shakhty, Rostov region, under the article on the dissemination of 'fakes' about the army motivated by political hatred and calls for extremist activity. The reason for the criminal prosecution was two reposts of information about the number of Russian military personnel killed and an emotional video clip published on VKontakte. The pensioner admitted guilt (except for the motive of political hatred) and explained her reaction by the fact that her brother in Dnipro was trapped under the rubble of a building destroyed by shelling. On February 14, a measure of restraint in the form of a ban on certain actions was chosen for the woman: the court prohibited her from using the Internet. On January 29, 2024, Judge Ilya Polovtsev of the Shakhty City Court of the Rostov Region found Evgenia Mayboroda guilty and sentenced her to five and a half years in a general regime colony. On May 2, 2024, the Rostov Regional Court left the verdict in force.
