On March 1, 2024, a 40-year-old local resident, Evgeny Zakharov, was detained in Yakutia. A criminal case was opened against him for cooperating on a confidential basis with a foreign state to the detriment of the Russian Federation. According to the security forces, in October 2022, the man, being a citizen of the Russian Federation, via correspondence in internet messengers, entered into a conspiracy with a representative of Ukrainian military intelligence and agreed with him on joint activities directed against the security of the Russian Federation. From November 2022 to February 2023, Zakharov transmitted information about the socio-economic situation in the republic, the attitude of the local population towards the SVO, mobilization measures and other information, as well as made anti-Russian inscriptions on banners with patriotic symbols in support of the SVO, which were subsequently used by Ukrainian special services for propaganda purposes. The defendants in the case were placed in custody for the duration of the investigation. On October 17, 2024, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) found Yevgeny Zakharov guilty and sentenced him to 4 years of imprisonment to be served in a general regime correctional colony and a fine of 20 thousand. rubles. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. In May 2025, a second criminal case was opened against Yevgeny Zakharov, who was serving his sentence in a colony - he was included in the list of Rosfinmonitoring as being involved in a crime of a terrorist nature. The reason for the criminal prosecution and under which article the case was opened is unknown. For the duration of the investigation, the man was taken out of the colony to the pre-trial detention center No. 1 in Yakutsk.
