Case Description
In Yekaterinburg, no later than July 22, 2024, a criminal case for high treason was initiated against 26-year-old Yevgeny Varaksin. According to the investigation, in April 2022, while in Poland, the man transferred money to the Polish Catholic charity fund 'Caritas Poland', which deals with social welfare and humanitarian aid issues. According to law enforcement officials, Varaksin supported the Armed Forces of Ukraine: the money he transferred was allegedly used to purchase equipment and ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The man was placed in a pre-trial detention center for the duration of the investigation. On April 18, 2025, the Sverdlovsk Regional Court found Yevgeny Varaksin guilty and sentenced him to 12 years of imprisonment with serving the sentence in a strict regime correctional colony. Also, he was fined 300 thousand. roubles and a probationary period of 1.5 years. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
