Unknown individuals set fire to relay cabinets on railway tracks in the Sovetsky district of Ulan-Ude on January 13 and 16, 2023. The fire on January 13 caused delays to two freight trains, while the one on January 16 had no impact on train traffic. Within two days, on January 18, three men were detained on charges of arson — 20-year-old Yevgeny Gorbunov, 18-year-old Konstantin Kolesnikov, and 17-year-old Danila Safonov. The young men were accused of committing sabotage. Kolesnikova and Safonova were also accused of treason. According to the indictment, two of the three young men committed arson for monetary reward, while the third acted out of ideological considerations and with the aim of providing assistance to a foreign state.
