Case Description
Yevgenia Bestuzheva was detained on October 25, 2022 in St. Petersburg. The publicist was accused of spreading "fakes" about the RF Armed Forces in 27 posts on VKontakte and was placed in custody. In 1991, political scientist Yevgeny Bestuzhev held the position of coordinator of the Democratic Russia movement, and in recent years he headed the department of the humanitarian and political science center Strategy and co-chaired the St. Petersburg branch of the Solidarity movement. On 5 November 2024, the Kalininsky District Court of St Petersburg found Yevgeny Bestuzhev guilty and sentenced him to 5 years and 3 months' imprisonment suspended." Bestuzheva was released in the courtroom under a written undertaking not to leave. At the end of December 2024, Bestuzhev was able to leave Russia for Lithuania. St. Petersburg City Court replaced a suspended sentence with a real one on May 20, 2025. The court also put the political scientist on the wanted list.
