Case Description
On July 2, 2025, a criminal case was opened in St. Petersburg against Elena Popova, a former coordinator of the "Movement of Conscientious Objectors. In the morning of August 5, 2025, a search was conducted at her home, during which, according to her, FSB officers broke down the door with an axe. Popov was accused of spreading "fakes" about the Russian army. Online broadcast on the birthday of the "Movement of Conscious Objectors, which Popova published on VKontakte on May 16, 2024, became the reason for criminal prosecution. In it, according to the investigation, there were false statements about the actions of the Russian military in Ukraine. On August 6, 2025, the Frunzensky District Court of St. Petersburg did not impose any preventive measure on Elena Popova, rejecting the prosecutor's petition for arrest." A month after the search and the start of criminal prosecution, Elena left Russia for Georgia without waiting for the trial. On December 26, 2025, it became known that the human rights defender had been arrested in absentia and placed on an interstate wanted list.
