Case Description
On May 6, 2023, a criminal case was opened in Moscow for participation in the activities of a terrorist organization and calls for terrorism against 61-year-old pensioner Elena Markova. The reason for the criminal prosecution was the woman's acquaintance with blogger and leader of the Artpodgotovka movement Vyacheslav Maltsev. According to law enforcement officials, a group of people led by Maltsev planned to hold a fake "Immortal Regiment" action on May 9: they allegedly intended to launch balloons with foil into the sky, which could paralyze the operation of air defense systems. It is claimed that Maltsev's supporters sent fake letters on behalf of the Moscow government to schools, demanding that schoolchildren and parents be involved in this action. On May 7, 2023, investigators came with a search to the village of Kratovo in the Ramensky district of the Moscow region, where Markov lived with her grandson. It is claimed that during the investigative actions, Markov's grandson confessed that the body of Markov's mother, V., was hidden in the shower room on the first floor of the house. Knyaginina, born in 1933. At the interrogation, Markova reported that she was acquainted with Maltsev, corresponded with him, and sometimes edited texts for his Telegram channel. She had "heard something about 'Artpodgotovka', but did not participate in this organization in any way, and therefore did not have any substantive information. Following a search and interrogation, the woman was taken to Moscow, where on May 10, 2023, the Butyrsky District Court of Moscow, at the request of the investigation, chose Markov's measure of restraint in the form of detention. 8 September 2023, another criminal case was opened against Markova under the article 'fraud in obtaining payments'. Simultaneously with this, a forensic medical examination was conducted to determine the presence of violent death in Knyaginina. On November 1, 2023, Elena Markova died in a cell of the Moscow SIZO-6 from heart failure."
