Case Description
In the village of Kholmogory, Arkhangelsk Oblast, early in the morning of December 8, 2022. Law enforcement officers came to search the home of local activist Elena Kalinina. After the search, Elena was taken for questioning to the regional prosecutor's office in Arkhangelsk. A criminal case was opened against her for the repeated "discrediting" of the Russian army. Kaliningrad was placed in a temporary detention center for the night, and the next day, on December 9, the Lomonosovsky District Court of Arkhangelsk released Kaliningrad under a prohibition of certain actions - she was prohibited from using communication means (telephone, Internet, mail), except in emergency cases, communicating with witnesses in the case, and attending public events. The reason for initiating the criminal case was two posts on VKontakte, in one of which Kalinina asked questions about whether it was normal that people were dying, and in the second there was a repost of a video with a story by a woman from Balakleya whose son died under fire from Russian soldiers. Earlier, in July 2022, the Oktyabrsky District Court of Arkhangelsk fined Kalinina under two administrative protocols on discrediting the Russian army due to posts with photographs of the destroyed Mariupol, published in her social networks. On May 12, 2023, Judge Dmitry Pyshkyn of the Holmogorsky District Court of the Arkhangelsk Region found Elena Kalinina guilty and sentenced her to a fine of 150 thousand. rub. Due to being in the IVS after the search, the court decided to mitigate the punishment imposed on her to 130 thousand. rubles. 24 August, the Arkhangelsk Regional Court upheld the sentence.
