Case Description
On August 25, 2023, a search was conducted at the home of activist Elena Abramova in St. Petersburg. A criminal case was opened against her for repeated "discrediting of the Russian army. After the search and interrogation, Abramov was placed in a pre-trial detention center. The next day, on August 26, the Kuibyshev District Court of St. Petersburg, at the request of the investigation, chose a preventive measure for the activist in the form of a ban on certain actions. The woman was prohibited from leaving St. Petersburg, participating in public and social events, and communicating in any way, including via the Internet, with certain individuals. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a picket with a poster "Freedom to Navalny! Freedom for all political prisoners! No to war!" in which Abramova went to Gostiny Dvor on June 4. On September 18, it became known that another episode had appeared in the case - a picket with a poster "A world without war." Russia without Putin. Earlier, Abramov had been held administratively liable under the article on discrediting the army at least twice — in December 2022 for a picket with a poster "No to war" and in April 2023 for a picket with a poster "Peace without war, Russia without Putin!", On March 25, 2025, the Kuybyshevsky District Court of St. Petersburg found Elena Abramova guilty and sentenced her to 2 years in a general regime colony and deprived her of the right to engage in public dissemination of information about the activities of the Russian Armed Forces and state bodies of the Russian Federation on the Internet and during assemblies, rallies, demonstrations, marches, picketing, and participation in them for 2.5 years. Abramov was taken into custody in the courtroom. On August 4, 2025, the St. Petersburg City Court ruled to change the type of correctional facility from a general regime colony to a settlement colony.
