Case Description
According to Russian law enforcement, Swedish citizen Jonathan Quanze, who allegedly fought in the Ukrainian army, was sentenced in absentia to 14 years in a strict regime penal colony under the article on mercenary participation in hostilities (ch. 3rd art. Article 359 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). According to the court, in December 2023, Quan on Ukrainian territory, out of mercenary motives, signed a contract and as a mercenary joined the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He underwent military training, was provided with firearms, ammunition, and other material and technical resources. Subsequently, obeying the orders of the commanders of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, being near the settlements of Avdiivka and Pervomaisk of the Donetsk People's Republic, Kvantz took part in an armed conflict against the Russian army. At the request of the investigation, a preventive measure in the form of detention was chosen in absentia against Kvant. He has been placed on an international wanted list.
