Case Description
In the occupied Donetsk region, a criminal case was opened regarding the participation of New Zealand citizen Jacob Patrick Lynch in an armed conflict. The date of the case being opened is unknown. According to the Russian investigation, from June to July 2023, Lynch arrived in Ukrainian territory, where he voluntarily joined the Chosen Company, which is part of the 59th Separate Motorized Infantry Brigade of the Ground Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as a mercenary. At training bases, he underwent military training, was provided with personal firearms, ammunition, uniforms, and special equipment, and participated in combat operations against the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. For monetary compensation, Lynch, following orders from higher command, participated in combat operations against the power structures of the DNR, LNR, and military personnel of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. In July 2023, Lynch ceased participating in the armed conflict due to receiving a wound. It is claimed that during his service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the serviceman received compensation amounting to more than 170 thousand rubles. At the request of the investigation, the court issued an in absentia arrest warrant for Lynch. He was placed on the international wanted list. On July 17, 2025, the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Jacob Patrick Lynch guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 14 years of imprisonment to be served in a strict regime penal colony. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
