Case Description
A criminal case was opened against Dmitry Stronov, a serviceman from Petrozavodsk, for "fakes" about the Russian army." The exact date of detention is unknown. As a preventive measure during the investigation, Stronova was placed under a written undertaking not to leave. According to law enforcement officials, Stronov "extremely negatively" perceived the conduct of the special military operation of the Russian Federation, and after arriving for military service under conscription to the military unit, decided to engage in illegal activities aimed at discrediting before the faces of his comrades-in-arms of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation during the conduct of the special military operation." Despite the fact that Strunov "daily received reliable information by watching television news containing official briefings of the Russian Ministry of Defense" from August to September 2022 in the barracks in the presence of other servicemen, he "under the guise of reliable information, reported in an affirmative and categorical form that the killings of civilians in the city of Bucha were committed by Russian servicemen, that Russian servicemen deliberately killed and burned the civilian population of Ukraine, including by bombing." Later, on one of the days in the first half of September 2022, while in the recreation room in the same barracks, Strunov, in the presence of other servicemen, in an affirmative and categorical manner reported that the Russian army is destroying not military equipment of the Ukrainian armed forces, but is shelling peaceful residents of Ukraine with various military equipment." In addition, on one of the days in mid-September 2022, in the sleeping quarters of his unit in the same barracks, Stronov, in the presence of servicemen, 'reported in an affirmative and categorical manner that servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces use narcotic substances during the special military operation, fighting "under the influence of drugs.'" At the same time, while spreading the above-mentioned "deliberately false information, Stronov claimed that this information was reliable and that he had received it from his relatives and friends living in Ukraine, as well as from the Internet. On August 17, 2023, Judge Vasily Chupryna of the Petrozavodsk Garrison Military Court found Dmitry Stronov guilty and sentenced him to a fine of 700 thousand rubles. On November 17, 2023, the 1st Western Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
