Case Description
In the occupied part of the Donetsk region, Mariupol, a criminal case was opened against a 23-year-old Ukrainian citizen, commander of the mortar platoon of the "Azov" regiment, Dmitry Popovichev, no later than April 2022. He was accused of cruel treatment of the civilian population, use of prohibited means and methods in an armed conflict, attempted murder of two or more persons committed by a group of persons in a generally dangerous manner, motivated by ideological and political hatred, and intentional damage to another's property in a generally dangerous manner. According to the Russian investigation, from March 7, 2022 to April 15, 2022, at the order of an officer, servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine carried out 100 mortar attacks on the residential area of the western outskirts of Mariupol." As a result, three houses were damaged, but peaceful citizens who were in shelters during the shelling were unharmed. On April 3, 2024, Judge German Alexandrov of the Supreme Court of the Donetsk People's Republic found Dmitry Popovichyov guilty and sentenced him in absentia to 28 years in a strict regime. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
