Case Description
In Moscow, no later than June 2022, a criminal case was opened against 44-year-old Major General of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Dmitry Marchenko. He was accused of public calls for terrorist activity, spreading "fakes" about the Russian army motivated by political hatred and using his official position, and inciting hatred and enmity, as well as humiliating the dignity of a group of persons based on nationality. According to the Russian investigation, from March to June 2022, Marchenko, being outside the Russian Federation, told local media that for Ukrainian military, the Crimean Bridge is the primary target for destruction, as reserves for the Russian Armed Forces are delivered across it. He also provided false information, in the opinion of the Investigative Committee of Russia, about the actions of the RF Armed Forces in Bucha, Mariupol, and Irpen. On January 14, 2024, the 2nd Western Military District Court found Dmitry Marchenko guilty in absentia and sentenced him to 14 years in prison to be served in a general regime penal colony. Also, the court deprived him of the right to post information and administer websites and channels on the Internet for 4 years. August 28, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
