Case Description
In March 2023, a criminal case was opened in occupied Donetsk against two local residents, Ukrainian citizens, 62-year-old Valentina Zayarna and 35-year-old Denis Storozhuk. They were accused of terrorism and illegal trafficking of explosives. According to the Russian investigation, the parcel from Kyiv, which they were supposed to receive, contained explosives. Valentina Zayarny stated that the case was fabricated by FSB officers. She said that during the military actions in Mariupol, Denis Storozhuk, who served in the border troops of Ukraine, was wounded. Zayarnaya once lost her son, so she took in and nursed the soldier after his injuries as if he were her own: 'When they started bombing Mariupol, I couldn't live there.' When people started being shot, I couldn't breathe. According to Storozhuk and Zayarna, the package they were supposed to pick up from the witness contained: shoes, various household appliances, and Storozhuk's passport, which he asked acquaintances from Ukraine to send. The defendants in the case were sent to the pre-trial detention center in March 2023. On September 13, 2024, Denis Storozhyuk was released as part of another prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine.
