Case Description
On the night of May 15, 2022, a military enlistment office caught fire in Volgograd. At first, military enlistment office workers explained the arrival of firefighters as exercises, but later admitted that "there was a fire, not a fire." "However, the damage from the "ignition" was ultimately estimated at almost one million rubles. On the same day, local resident Denis Serdyuk was detained. A search was conducted in his apartment. Charges were brought against the man for "deliberate destruction or damage to another's property by arson" and "hooliganism using weapons, and he was sent to a pre-trial detention center. Denis did not deny his actions and stated that he sought to express his civic position and stop the hostilities in Ukraine." On February 27, 2023, the Soviet District Court of Volgograd sentenced Denis Serdyuk to 4 years in a general regime colony. The court also ordered that Serdyuk pay 923.2 thousand rubles towards compensation for material damage to the Ministry of Defense, and ordered that the laptop seized from Denis be used for this purpose. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force.
