Case Description

In the Rostov region on the border with Ukraine on 31 March 2022, a 37-year-old Ukrainian, a resident of the city of Rubezhnoye in the Lugansk region, former assistant to the mayor of this city Denis Murigu, was detained. Russian security forces stated that the man tried to enter Russian territory under the guise of a refugee. In relation to Muryga, two administrative offense reports were drawn up under the article on violation of border crossing rules and petty hooliganism. According to the first protocol, the court fined him 2 thousand. rubles, and under the second one he sent him under administrative arrest for 12 days. After the end of the administrative arrest, the Ukrainian was taken by security forces and transported to Rostov-on-Don with a bag over his head. He was accused of participating in an armed formation on the territory of a foreign state and undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities. According to the investigation, Denis Muruga joined the Aidar battalion in 2015, received weapons there, underwent military training, and guarded the camp. On May 18, 2022, the Leninsky District Court of Rostov-on-Don placed Muruga in a pre-trial detention center. June 20, 2023, the Southern Military Court found Denis Muruga guilty and sentenced him to 16 years in a strict regime colony. On November 1, 2023, the Appellate Military Court upheld the sentence.
