16 October 2023, an unknown person set fire to railway equipment at the 336th kilometer of the Safonovo - Milokovo section in the Smolensk region. Firefighters discovered two burning relay boxes, one of which had been opened. The equipment was responsible for the traffic lights on the tracks. On 19 October 2023, the FSB Directorate for the Smolensk Region reported the detention of two 22-year-old local residents, Ivan Kunitsyn and Denis Kulazhenkov. Initially, a criminal case was opened against them for bringing communication routes into disrepair, but the charge was later reclassified as sabotage committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy. According to the FSB, the young men set fire to the equipment 'on the orders of an unidentified person from a messenger.' The interlocutor offered them a reward, which the young men did not receive. The court sent the young men to a pre-trial detention center. On 5 November 2024, the Smolensk Regional Court found Denis Kulazhenkov guilty and sentenced him to 12 years in prison. For the first 3 years, the man will have to spend time in prison, and the remaining time in a strict regime colony. The case of the second defendant was separated into a separate proceeding. On 6 December 2024, the Smolensk Regional Court found Ivan Kunitsyn guilty and sentenced him to 7 years in prison. On 5 May 2025, the First Appellate Court of General Jurisdiction left Kunitsyn's sentence unchanged.
