Case Description

On March 6, the FSB reported on the prevention of an assassination attempt on the Orthodox oligarch Konstantin Malofeev. According to the agency's version, Denis Kapustin, organizer and direct participant" in the raid of saboteurs in the Bryansk region, planned to blow up the businessman's car. The security forces claim that a "homemade explosive device" was found in the Mercedes car of the entrepreneur. November 16, the Second Western District Military Court sentenced Denis Kapustin to life imprisonment in absentia. The verdict was not appealed and entered into legal force. Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case in early March 2023 regarding an attack by participants of the "Russian Volunteer Corps" on the settlements of Lyubechane and Sushany in Klimovsky district of Bryansk region. According to reports, two people were killed and a ten-year-old child was injured in the attack - he underwent surgery to remove a bullet. The leaders and participants of the banned in Russia terrorist RDK Denis Kapustin (Nikitin), Kirill Kanakhin, Alexander Galanov, Alexey Ogurtsov and Anton Zyryanov were charged by the Russian investigation. They were accused of terrorism, attempted murder of law enforcement officers, undergoing training for the purpose of carrying out terrorist activities, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition, illegal possession of explosive devices and substances, illegal possession of large-caliber firearms, organizing an illegal armed formation or participating in it, illegal crossing of the state border, smuggling of potent and poisonous substances, organizing a terrorist community or participating in it, propaganda of terrorism and robbery. On November 14, 2024, the 2nd Western Military District Court found the defendants guilty and sentenced them all in absentia to life imprisonment. Defendants must spend the first eight years in prison, the remaining ones in a special regime colony. The court also fined Kapustin and Kanakhin 2.5 million and 2 million rubles respectively. The term of punishment will be calculated from the moment of detention on the territory of the Russian Federation or extradition to Russia. In addition, the court satisfied the civil claims of the victims against the convicts totaling 10 million rubles, as well as claims from organizations providing infrastructure for settlements in the Bryansk region, amounting to 3.5 million rubles. The defendants in the case were placed on international wanted list. Earlier in 2023, Denis Kapustin and Kirill Kanakhin were also sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment for treason, attempted terrorism, creating a terrorist community, and several other charges. January 28, 2025, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged. On February 17, 2025, Anton Zyryanov died near Kupyansk.
