Case Description
In Veliky Novgorod, Novgorod Oblast, in April 2024, a criminal case was initiated for "public calls for extremist activity" against a local 21-year-old Danila Spirkov. The reason for the criminal prosecution was a photograph on VKontakte showing a hand with the middle finger pointed at a police car with the caption: "Life to thieves, death to the trash." The photo was posted in March 2022. FSB "linguistic experts" found in the inscription a call to commit "hostile, violent actions" against police officers. It is unknown what preventive measure was chosen. On November 6, 2024, the Soltsy District Court of Novgorod Oblast found Danila Spirkov guilty and sentenced him to conditional imprisonment for 1 year with a probation period of 1 year and deprivation of the right to post appeals and other materials on the "Internet" for 1 year. The verdict was not appealed and entered into force.
