Case Description
In Alushta, in annexed Crimea, in May 2026, a criminal case was initiated against 63-year-old local resident Daniil Tovbein. He was charged with the public rehabilitation of Nazism via the internet (desecration of symbols of military glory and insulting the memory of defenders of the Fatherland).
According to the investigation, Tovbein posted comments on his public social media page under a patriotic publication. Law enforcement authorities believed these messages desecrated symbols associated with a significant Russian commemorative date—Hero of the Fatherland Day (December 9).
There is no information on the measure of restraint.
On September 8, 2026, the Supreme Court of the Republic of Crimea found Daniil Tovbein guilty and sentenced him to 2.5 years in a penal colony-settlement. The court also stripped him of the right to administer websites or publish materials on the internet.
