Case Description
In mid-April 2023, security forces detained activist Bulat Shumekov from Kiselevsk in the Kemerovo region - a criminal case was opened against him under the article on the dissemination of "fakes" about the Russian army. The reason was a series of reposts and publications about the war with Ukraine on his VKontakte page, in which Russian military personnel were accused of committing crimes and shedding the blood of peaceful Ukrainian citizens. The man was sent to a pre-trial detention center. Later, the charges were made more severe by adding a point about the motive of political hatred. On March 9, 2023, Judge Valentin Sangadzhiev of the Kiselevsk City Court of the Kemerovo Region found Bulat Shumakov guilty and sentenced him to seven years in a general regime colony. On June 28, 2023, the Kemerovo Regional Court reduced the sentence to five and a half years.
