Case Description

In Yevpatoria, in the annexed Crimea, on the morning of May 16, 2022, a local 27-year-old resident, Bogdan Ziza, poured yellow and blue paint on the city administration and threw a Molotov cocktail at it. The mixture that got inside did not ignite due to the extinguished wick. The security guard who ran out of the doors of the building extinguished the burning liquid that spilled over the stone facade and the ground in front of him. Crimean Tatar was detained on the same day, after which the TV channel "Crimea 24" published a video with his apologies. Subsequently, Ziza said that security forces forced him to make apologies through beatings and pressure. Initially, Ziza was charged with a criminal case of vandalism and attempted intentional destruction of someone else's property, but the next day, after the intervention of the FSB's Crimean department and the transfer of the investigation to it, the case was reclassified as a terrorist act. According to the investigation, Ziza attempted to set fire to the administration building 'with the aim of intimidating the population of Russia and influencing the decision of the authorities to cease the special military operation.' On May 20, 2022, the Kievsky District Court of Simferopol sent Ziza to a pre-trial detention center. On June 6, 2023, the Southern Military Court found Bogdan Zizu guilty and sentenced him to 15 years in prison. Of this sentence, the Crimean must serve 4 years in prison, the remainder - in a strict regime colony. The court also deprived Ziza of the right to administer websites on the Internet for 2 years." "On September 27, 2023, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict.
