Case Description
In St. Petersburg on May 15, 2023, a criminal case was opened for calls for terrorism and incitement of hatred or enmity against a 27-year-old local resident, Arthur Kanin. According to the security forces, the man administered the 'Russian Volunteer Corps' chat on Telegram. On January 8 and 11, 2023, he left comments about the Russian people inhabiting Pomorye and allegedly called for the arson of military enlistment offices. The first comment began with the word "Glory..." and ended with "Russian. At the beginning of March of the same year, the defendant left the chat and deleted all his comments. The prosecution presented a screenshot of an archive of messages published in the chat as evidence of guilt." During the investigation, Kanin was placed under a written undertaking not to leave. On October 23, 2024, the 1st Western Military Court found Arthur Kanin guilty and sentenced him to four years in a general regime penal colony. The court also prohibited Kanina from administering websites on the Internet for three years. The iPhone that was confiscated from the man during the search was confiscated by the court in favor of the state. The man was taken into custody in the courtroom. February 19, 2025, the Appellate Military Court upheld the verdict.
