Case Description
In March 2023, 18-year-old student Andrey Vasyurenko was detained in the Republic of Karelia. He was accused of "attempting to incite state treason by defecting to the enemy." This is the first criminal case of state treason in this form. Vasurenko was sent to a pre-trial detention center for the duration of the investigation. According to the FSB, 18-year-old Andrei, being "a supporter of the independence of Karelia", allegedly "tried to persuade" Russians to participate in the war on the side of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. At the same time, the student's actions were not successful. On February 5, 2024, the 1st Western Military District Court found Andrey Vasyurenko guilty and sentenced him to 9 years in prison, 2.5 years in prison, the rest in a strict regime colony. on April 10, 2024, the Appellate Military Court left the sentence unchanged.
