Notes
Has lived in Mariupol all his life. Before the start of the Russian invasion, he worked at "Azovstal" and the Ilyich Mariupol Metallurgical Plant. He did not evacuate after the start of the war and hid in the basement of his five-story building, which was also severely damaged by the war. During one of the shelling, Lazarenko injured his shoulder - a fragment of 'something big' hit him. In the summer of 2022, he helped four women leave the already captured Mariupol, and when he returned - he was not allowed into the city and was taken first to Donetsk, then to Taganrog, and then sent to Mordovia. In November 2022, Lazarenko was forced to accept Russian citizenship and unsuccessfully persuaded to join the Russian army. The man did not renounce his Ukrainian passport, but this passport was not found in the case. In April 2025, he wrote a statement to renounce Russian citizenship.

Case Description

In the village of Bolshiye Berezniki in the Republic of Mordovia, at 5 a.m. on October 15, 2023, unknown individuals arrived at the home of 53-year-old Ukrainian citizen with forced Russian citizenship, Andrei Lazarenko, put a bag over his head, and took him somewhere. He sat for more than a day in an unknown place with a bag over his head and with his hands tied. The next day, the man was brought to court in the village of Chamzinka, where Judge Andrey Isaev of the Chamzinsky District Court of the Republic of Mordovia placed the Ukrainian under administrative arrest for 14 days under the article on petty hooliganism. According to the police report, on October 15, around 8 p.m., the Mariupol resident 'was walking drunk and shouting something.' 3. In the detention center, according to Lazarenko, a "well-dressed" man came to him twice, who waved a "certificate" from the FSB in front of his face and treated him to a cigarette. For a conversation with him, the Ukrainian was taken to a separate room. The security forces asked Lazarenko to write a confession and admit to preparing an arson of the military enlistment office, but he refused. Then an FSB officer began to threaten rape if he did not sign a confession. Lazarenko agreed, and later, at the request of the FSB investigator, signed "about 20" blank sheets during interrogation." 3. Upon release from the detention center, Lazarenko was detained again, this time on criminal charges: he was accused of treason and attempted terrorism. According to the investigation, in September 2023, Lazarenko contacted representatives of the "Azov" battalion, whom he offered a monetary reward to set fire to the military enlistment office in the village of Bolshiye Berezniki in Mordovia "in order to assist the special services of Ukraine. Then Lazarenko allegedly bought the necessary ingredients and involved his acquaintance Yuri Kravchenko in the matter. On October 15, 2023, he arrived at the military enlistment office, but did not manage to set it on fire — the Ukrainian was detained by FSB officers. The man was placed in a pre-trial detention center. On December 9, 2025, the Central Military District Court found Andrei Lazarenko guilty and sentenced him to 18 years in a strict regime colony, with the first 5 years of the sentence to be served in prison, and the remaining term in a strict regime colony.
