Case Description
On September 11, 2024, in the Belgorod region, at the 697th kilometer of the Novy Oskol - Volokonovka section, due to interference with railway transport, a freight train locomotive and 11 empty cars derailed. The incident occurred at 23:17. As a result, the railway track and contact network were damaged. The driver and his assistant were not injured. The Western Interregional Transport Investigative Department of the Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case on terrorism that caused significant property damage. On the night of 31 May to 1 June 2025, at 22.44 in the area of the village of Vygonichi in the Bryansk region, an automobile bridge was blown up. The passenger train No. 86Sh, following the route Klintsy—Moscow, crashed into the debris of a fallen structure and derailed; the locomotive and several cars were seriously damaged; seven people, including the driver, died on the spot, more than a hundred were injured. 20 August 2025, the FSB, together with the National Guard and the Ministry of Internal Affairs, detained three Ukrainian citizens, servicemen of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - 23-year-old Oleksandr Zhuk, 55-year-old Roman Davydiuk, and 30-year-old Oleksandr Hodko - in the Bryansk region. Three more people - 23-year-old sergeant Denis Medvedyuk, senior soldier Dmitry Gavrilyenko, and 35-year-old junior lieutenant Vitaly Yavkun - were liquidated. The FSB called them "members of the Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group" and stated their involvement in the derailment of wagons in the Belgorod region and the explosion of a bridge in the Bryansk region. It is claimed that Lieutenant Colonel Andrey Kolodko of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence was in charge of the group. Zhuk, Davydyuk, and Godko were accused of terrorism resulting in significant property damage, preparation for sabotage, illegal circulation of weapons and explosives, smuggling of weapons and explosives, attempted murder of a law enforcement officer, and illegal crossing of the state border. According to the FSB's version, the detained and liquidated Ukrainians are members of the Ukrainian sabotage and reconnaissance group "Bobry", which is part of the 3rd Regiment of the Special Operations Forces of Ukraine and is overseen by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine. The group's goal was to carry out sabotage and terrorist attacks on transport infrastructure facilities. According to the investigation, on September 11, 2024, they organized the derailment of a locomotive and 11 cars of a freight train in the Novoorsk district of the Belgorod region."
