Case Description
In March 2022, video blogger Andrei Filippov from Yoshkar-Ola published a video titled 'The War Between Russia and Ukraine: A Ukrainian's Perspective' on his YouTube channel, which has over 700 subscribers. In the video, he analyzed a release from the Russian Ministry of Defense and expressed doubt that all Ukrainian Armed Forces servicemen were nationalists, and that a Ukrainian missile base was located in the shopping center bombed by Russian forces. The investigation considered this video to be the dissemination of "fakes" about the war "motivated by political hatred, and a criminal case was opened against Andrey Filippov, and he was sent to a pre-trial detention center. June 30, 2023, the Yoshkar-Ola City Court of the Republic of Mari El sentenced Andrey Filippov to a fine of 1,800,000 rubles. He was released from custody in the courtroom. On August 30, 2023, the Supreme Court of the Mari El Republic left the sentence unchanged."
